Rebecca Ahola
Hello, I am Rebecca Ahola, a Middle Grade and Young Adult author raised in Tasmania living in Far North Queensland. I am also a Guidance Officer and English Teacher. I am passionate about helping young people develop a love of reading and writing stories. Get in touch if you’d like me to come to your school!
As both a teacher and a counsellor, I have seen the power stories have to help young people make sense of the world. I am passionate about creating characters that children both love and to whom they can relate.
My love of fantasy started when I was very young. My childhood was filled with ‘make believe’ games with friends that would span the whole neighbourhood and would take weeks to play out. I started playing Dungeons and Dragons with my older brother when I was seven and loved losing myself in a magical world where you could be anyone you wanted to be.
I have always loved reading and creating stories. When I woke up scared of the monster in my bedroom cupboard, I could simply pick up a book, and all the scary things would go away. If I had a bad day, I would write myself a story before bed where everything had turned out well and the world would be a happy place again.
In all the books I have ever loved, characters have to dig deep, band together and overcome adversity. My belief that narrative teaches us that we can shape our own lives the same way is at the centre of my storytelling.
Above all else, I want my readers to fall in love with my characters and enjoy their adventures. Well, you might not like the baddies, but sometimes even the bad guys can surprise us too!
